Big projects take a lot of work.

Projects that are valuable and worthwhile -- that mean something to pursue -- take a lot of time, energy and money. Even on a small scale, knowing that landscaping your front yard is going to require (1) a new mower (because the old one doesn’t hold an edge any more), (2) hours of repeated maintenance, (3) flowers and shrubs, and (4) quite possibly the entire row of lawn bags from your local grocer so that you can clear out weeds, leaves, sticks and brambles -- knowing all of that is overwhelming.

The idea of starting a project is exciting, because we so easily think about the finished result, but then we actually look at a plan and realize that, to be honest, it’s too much. How can I afford this? Where can I find this time? What will I lose in the process?

How do I get from the start of the idea to the finished product?

 

Do the next step.

Obviously, right? But if the project is worth doing -- if the new business venture, product line, service overhaul, culture improvement -- is worth the cost, just start with the next step. And then do the next step, and the next step, and the next.
